May 10 – Colombian coffee growers to showcase lots in quality contest (GCR Mag)

More than 1,000 coffee growers from 15 regions in Colombia will showcase their best coffee lots from the November-February harvest in this year’s Colombia Land of Diversity quality contest. The competition, which is organised by the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC), rewards the effort, dedication, and commitment to quality of the Colombian coffee farmers.

May 11 – Pret A Manger to trial locations in supermarket (World Coffee Portal)

Pret A Manger is set to open stores inside Tesco supermarkets across the UK as part of a trial to diversify its customer base. After a year in which normal trading was heavily disrupted by the global pandemic, the coffee chain is now looking at ways of broadening its traditional commuter clientele. The first Pret concession store will open in June at Tesco Superstore in Kensington, west London, with four more expected to follow later in the summer.

May 11 – Dutch Master Roasters launches 15-kilo-capacity drum roaster (Daily Coffee News)

Dutch entrepreneurs Sander Bussink and Clemens te Pas have marked the launch of their company, Dutch Master Roasters, with the release of a 15-kilogram-capacity roaster. The commercial roaster, named DMR 15-A, is tablet-controlled and has been designed to recycle heat for maximum gas efficiency. When not in use, it automatically switches off its motors and fans, and includes a built-in interior cooling system to minimise downtime between roasts.

May 11 – Study shows US coffee consumption rise during pandemic (GCR Mag)

Thirty-seven percent of consumers have been drinking more coffee per week since the start of the pandemic, according to a survey by German coffee retailers Tchibo. The survey, which examined the habits of more than 1,000 US consumers since the outbreak of Covid-19, also found that 73% of coffee drinkers report that they have been making more coffee at home than they did pre-pandemic.

May 11 – McDonald’s to promote Covid vaccine on coffee cups (CNN)

Fast food chain McDonald’s has partnered with the White House to promote Covid-19 vaccinations across their coffee cups. From July, McDonald’s will roll out redesigned McCafe cups featuring the US Department of Health’s slogan, “We Can Do This”, as part of a push to encourage higher uptake of vaccines. They will also include a website address directing customers to nearby appointments and safety information.

May 12 – New pricing model designed to meet coffee farmers’ livelihood needs (World Coffee Portal)

Bellwether Coffee, Heifer International, and Sustainable Harvest have combined forces to create a new trading model designed to ensure coffee farmers are paid a living wage. The Verified Living Income pricing model is based on the realities of coffee farm overheads rather than market forces, with the aim of fostering greater profitability at origin. The model was developed through a pilot study of 38 smallholder farmers in Tolima, Colombia.

May 12 – Oatly targets $10 billion IPO valuation (World Coffee Portal)

Dairy-milk alternative brand Oatly has commenced an initial public offering (IPO) that could value the company at $10 billion. Listing around 84 million American Depositary Shares (ADS) at $15-$17 each, the Swedish brand is expected to raise up to $1.43 billion when it goes live on May 20. Sales of oat milk have soared in recent years and become the fastest-growing plant-based milk category, as consumer interest in sustainable alternatives grows.

May 13 – DeLonghi reports Q1 growth amid sustained at-home consumption (World Coffee Portal)

Coffee machine and appliance manufacturer DeLonghi has reported a 72.6% increase in first quarter net revenue compared to the same period in 2020. The Italian company’s profits also rose by 636.2% to $97.7 million. DeLonghi’s strong growth indicates a sustained trend towards at-home coffee consumption even as coffee shops reopen in many parts of the world.

May 18 – Rainforest Alliance appoints new CEO Santiago Gowland (Daily Coffee News)

Rainforest Alliance has appointed Santiago Gowland, a former The Nature Conservancy executive, as its new CEO. Gowland, who is a native of Argentina, joins the international nongovernmental organisation as it undergoes a transition to a new certification programme and standards. He replaces Han de Groot, who oversaw the merger of Rainforest Alliance and UTZ in 2017.

May 18 – New Greenpeace film aims to raise plastic waste awareness (Creative Review)

Environmental nonprofit Greenpeace has released an animated film, titled Wasteminster, to highlight the problem of UK plastic waste being dumped overseas. The two-minute clip shows the UK prime minister, Boris Johnson, being showered in single-use plastic items while delivering a speech about the country’s role in tackling waste pollution. It forms part of Greenpeace’s call for a complete ban on all plastic waste exports by 2025.

May 18 – Four lots break 90 barrier at Nicaragua Cup of Excellence awards (Daily Coffee News)

Coffees from four different lots have broken past the elusive 90-point mark on the SCA scale at the 2021 Nicaragua Cup of Excellence (COE) awards. The highest-scoring lot was a washed Pacamara variety submitted by previous COE-winning producer Jesus Mountain Coffee in Nueva Segovia. A total of 23 coffee producers won COE awards, scoring 87 points and above. All 23 lots will go to an online auction on June 29.

May 19 – Peet’s Coffee announces carbon neutral series coffee subscription (PR Newswire)

US coffee chain Peet’s Coffee has announced the launch of a new carbon neutral coffee subscription that will allow customers to offset their carbon footprint over time. In partnership with sustainability nonprofit Enveritas, Peet’s is sponsoring the planting of three carbon dioxide-absorbing mangrove supertrees in Myanmar every time they deliver 2lbs of their coffee – the equivalent of 36 trees per annual subscription. A rotation of twelve coffee varieties will be available with the subscription.
