According to a 2022 survey, consumers spent an average of $170 on Easter-related items. The survey reveals customers are eager to return to pre-pandemic holiday traditions.

Roasters and coffee shops can capitalise on this by offering Easter-related coffees, or varieties that pair well with chocolate flavours.

That said, the specialty coffee market can be fiercely competitive. One tactic that has been adopted to steal mindshare, pique consumer interest, and stay ahead of the competition is seasonal coffee packaging.

Custom-printed coffee bags for Easter can help create a sense of excitement around the products while pushing a brand to the forefront of consumers’ minds.

Why offer ‘seasonal’ or ‘holiday’ coffees?

A growing number of roasters and cafes are creating ‘seasonal’ or ‘holiday’ offerings to help increase sales during the holiday seasons.

This is highly effective as consumers are aware they have a deadline, as the product is likely to be removed from the shelves once the holiday is over. In turn, this could lead to customers stocking up on their favourite blends to use on social occasions.

Custom-printed seasonal coffee packaging is particularly popular over the festive period. For instance, roasters may offer spiced pumpkin-flavoured coffee during October to celebrate Halloween and gingerbread-flavoured coffees for Christmas.

A prime example is US coffee chain Starbucks, which is famous for its holiday-based coffees and Christmas blends. In-store, the brand also offers consumers gingerbread, eggnog and toffee lattes, as well as toffee nut-cream cold brew.

According to Forbes, Starbucks’ revenue rose by 12% during the festive season, amounting to $5.37 billion.

Effective ways to promote Easter at your coffee shop or roastery

In addition to offering Easter coffee blends, roasters and cafes can promote the holiday in several ways.

For instance, roasters can offer blends that complement the tone of Easter. This may include coffees with strong chocolate flavour notes or adding flavourings such as cinnamon.

On the other hand, cafes can add Easter specials to the menu, such as a hot cross bun served alongside an Easter-blend coffee.

Both can invest in Easter-themed coffee packaging and merchandise. Themed items may provide businesses with additional traction online, as consumers feel the need to share images and videos of the products.

Brands can custom-print coffee bags, takeaway cups, and coffee subscription boxes for the month. Additionally, some brands may choose to expand by offering custom-printed shopping totes and t-shirts.

To further promote a brand and reach more customers via social media, roasters and cafes can hold an Easter event.

Activities can include a scavenger hunt, where the prize would be a free bag of Easter-themed coffee and, if promoting gifts, an Easter tote bag.

This form of marketing can help build a coffee brand’s social media following and increase engagement.

An Easter event will bring in more customers who are likely to browse the products and purchase both Easter items, as well as traditional offerings.

Other community-driven ideas could include:

  • An Easter-themed after hours party: This can include Easter-themed drinks such as espresso martinis and chocolate-based cocktails.
  • Children’s activities: Alongside a scavenger hunt, children can be entertained through a colouring and drawing competition, making pinatas, or interacting with the Easter bunny.
  • Adult’s only coffee cocktail making class: Offer an event that shows consumers how to make espresso martinis at home using your Easter blend.
  • Easter-themed coffee tasting: Offer customers the chance to cup samples of Easter-themed coffee offerings. This can help increase their knowledge of specialty coffee, and boost sales.

Designing custom-printed coffee bags for Easter

An Easter-themed coffee bag is an effective way for customers to recognise what the blend is going to be.

It will also tell them the item is likely to be on sale for a limited time, which can help speed up the decision to purchase.

When designing custom-printed coffee bags for Easter, consider adding elements such as rabbits, eggs, and flowers that bloom during that period.

Additionally, pastel colours, such as pastel blues, pinks and purples, are typically associated with Easter.

It is important to note these custom-printed coffee bags are likely to be short print run. Therefore, it is essential roasters and cafes ensure branding is reflected accurately.

Brand consistency is essential to retaining existing customers and gaining new ones. If the logo is inconsistent, customers may not recognise the brand.

Alternatively, they may mistake it as a counterfeit, which can build negative consumer perceptions of the product.

With the number of counterfeit items on the rise, it is essential that a product’s packaging colours are accurate and consistent.

Inconsistent packaging can come across as careless and messy – traits that roasters want to avoid being associated with their coffee beans.

Notably, sustainable packaging has become a priority for both businesses and customers over the last few years. The demand for sustainable packaging materials has risen by 81% this year alone.

Other studies found 54% of customers aged 44 and under consider the sustainability of packaging when purchasing products. Furthermore, 70% of the public consider themselves environmentally aware.

Sustainable materials that are recyclable, biodegradable and/or compostable include:

  • Kraft paper
  • Rice paper
  • Polylactic acid (PLA)

All of these materials pose no threat to the environment and are able to be customised to a brand’s specifications.

At MTPak Coffee, we offer roasters and coffee shops a range of 100% recyclable coffee packaging options that can be custom-printed to your business specifications.
