Coffee is one of the highest-traded commodities in the world. However, research shows this results in around 500 billion disposable takeaway coffee cups being used globally each year.

More so, this number is expected to rise as the coffee shop market reaches an estimated $261.80 billion by 2029. As the demand for sustainable packaging materials increases, more coffee businesses are realising the benefits of eco-friendly alternatives, such as recyclable takeaway coffee cups.

Additionally, as sales of cold coffee beverages continue to soar, clear takeaway coffee cups are growing in popularity.

Notably, Michael Craig, the CEO of Creature Coffee Co. reveals that 80% of the brand’s summer sales stem from iced drinks – which are served in clear takeaway coffee cups. He explains how customising clear coffee cups can help boost brand recognition.

How the design & purpose of takeaway coffee cups has evolved

Disposable cups were developed as a life-saving technology in the early 20th century. While they still deliver the same health and safety benefits today, modern single-use cups have little resemblance to those created in the 20th century.

Modern takeaway cups are available in a variety of shapes, sizes, and designs. Furthermore, they can now be made from sustainable materials, which makes them recyclable or compostable. Beyond this, takeaway coffee cups can now be customised using eco-friendly inks, and designed to serve both hot and cold beverages.

Research shows younger generations in particular tend to prefer cold coffee drinks. This is largely because ready-to-drink (RTD) beverages are much more convenient for Millennial and Gen Z consumers who have more on-the-go lifestyles. In fact, Mintel found that 60% of Gen Z consumers prefer RTD coffee beverages such as cold brew, over hot brewed coffee.

As the majority of cold coffee beverages are served in clear takeaway coffee cups, customising them can benefit coffee shops in several ways. That said, to appeal to an increasingly eco-conscious market, businesses must determine how to brand their cups sustainably.

“When we started five years ago, it was tough to find something that fitted the brand but was still affordable,” explains Michael, who has also worked as a barista. “Now, there are a lot of brands trying to make headway and do the right thing.”

He admits that investing in sustainable packaging materials is more expensive and can be challenging to do. “But, I think if more companies decide to make that investment, they can help push the boundaries a little bit more as well. I hope one day we can switch everything over to be fully sustainable or biodegradable.”

Why customise clear takeaway coffee cups?

When Creature Coffee Co. launched, the brand used white takeaway cups that featured a stamp. “Then we had clear plastic cups, but we hated having to put stickers on them because they affected the cup’s ability to be composted or recycled.”

As the business expanded, the brand had enough space to buy custom takeaway coffee cups, and invested in compostable paper cups, and recyclable clear takeaway coffee cups. “We use paper cups for all of our hot beverages, while our clear takeaway coffee cups are often used for iced americano, cold brew, and iced lattes,” says Michael.

Michael explains the brand chose to use these cups because of the weather in Texas. “We have about 110°F (between 38°C and 43°C) weather every day for around six months, which is just below the temperature where clear cups start to melt,” he says. “Also, if a customer leaves a compostable cup in their car, in direct sunlight, it can shrink.”

The brand’s paper takeaway coffee cups are available in three sizes, and all are custom-printed. The larger cups feature two graphics holding hands, with the white, yellow, and pink designs popping off a bright blue background.

Creature Coffee Co.’s clear takeaway coffee cups feature the same illustration in white, with the phrase ‘Let’s be friends’ across the top.

“We wanted our brand to be recognised when we went out,” Michael explains. “The design on our clear cups is quite prominent when the cup is full. He adds that the quality of the mil the brand uses, alongside the coffee it provides, is high-end. “Therefore, we wanted the branding on the cup to look like it is high-quality yet professional, while still being fun and cute.”

Michael also reveals that several consumers take pictures of the brand’s cups. “Essentially, we wanted our logo to be crisp and clear, and we wanted the cup to shout ‘Create Coffee.”

Investing in sustainable takeaway coffee cups: What to consider

As Creature Coffee Co. is an espresso caterer, the brand has little control over disposal facilities at the different venues it works with. This is why it has invested in takeaway coffee cups that have a minimal effect on the environment.

“Choosing compostable and recyclable cups may cost us more money, but it is within the company ethos,” explains Michael. “We love all people and we love the planet, so if we can decrease our carbon footprint with compostable or recyclable cups, it matches what we want to do.”

At MTPak Coffee, we have years of experience and industry knowledge, allowing us to deliver coffee shop owners and specialty coffee roasters with the right disposable coffee cups. All of our takeaway cups are made from high-quality printable materials that are kind to the environment.

Our range of sustainable takeaway cups is made from recyclable materials such as bamboo fibre or kraft paper with an environmentally friendly PLA lining. We also offer recyclable plastic cups made from PET.

All our cups are available in different sizes: 4 oz, 8 oz, 16 oz, 12 oz, and 24 oz.
