In the world of coffee packaging, laminates are intricate artistic layers that shape a brand’s visual identity. Packaging finishes on custom coffee bags not only enrich the consumer experience but also act as a second layer of protection.

Recent research suggests it takes consumers roughly 0.05 seconds to form an impression of a brand or product. Therefore, appearance, visibility, and individuality are crucial elements for coffee businesses that want to stand out among competitors.

However, there are several different types of packaging laminate available for specialty coffee roasters. I spoke to Brian Ludviksen, the director of operations at Purity Coffee, about how packaging finishes on custom coffee bags contribute to brand identity.

Exploring packaging finishes for custom coffee bags

Several studies have confirmed that factors such as packaging colour, shape, and texture can significantly influence consumers’ perception of product quality. For example, research shows that some packaging finishes are associated with luxury and contribute to a premium image.

Hot foil stamping

Hot foil stamping involves applying metallic or pigmented foil under heat and pressure, creating a shiny, reflective layer on specific areas of the packaging. This cost-effective method elevates design and offers an eye-catching, luxurious effect for a premium appearance.

Foil stamping can make logos and brand names more prominent, which helps to boost brand recognition. More importantly, hot foil-stamped packaging, including the foil used, is often fully recyclable, aligning with sustainable packaging choices.

Spot UV

Another option is spot UV, which uses a transparent, glossy ultraviolet (UV) coating. This can be applied to certain elements of the design to create a contrast for coated or glossy areas. This technique enhances visual appeal and brand identity, providing a glossy, tactile, and raised finish that imparts an elegant quality to custom coffee bags.
The interplay between matte and glossy finishes pushes consumer attention to specific areas. This creates a memorable packaging experience and engages consumers on a sensory level.

Ensuring custom coffee bags remain sustainable

Brian has worked within specialty coffee for years, with roles ranging from small-batch coffee roaster to national operations manager. “Purity Coffee has a commitment that spans every step of the coffee production process and upholds the highest standards for health and taste,” he says.

The brand’s view encompasses how coffee is grown, harvested, processed, stored, tested, and packaged. “As there is a high level of post-consumer resin within the coffee industry, we’re making all of our coffee packaging as recyclable as possible to contribute to a circular economy,” Brian explains.

Purity Coffee uses stand-up coffee pouches that come in a variety of calming colours, such as aqua blue, sunset orange, earth brown, and grass green. The brand’s seasonal coffee bags feature festive graphics, including snow-capped mountains, holly cherries, candles, and Christmas trees. Each custom coffee bag also features a resealable zipper for ease of use.

Purity Coffee’s dedication to health and quality shines through its packaging. Each of the brand’s custom coffee bags reflects the brand’s commitment to transparency, quality control, and sustainability.

The brand’s coffee bags are a visual representation of its commitment to health-conscious consumers, with a glossy design that enhances the brand’s logo and displays the type of coffee inside.

Packaging laminates: Better protection for custom coffee bags

Purity Coffee recognizes the importance of freshness in delivering a superior coffee experience. The brand’s eco-friendly packaging not only preserves the freshness of its beans but also reflects its commitment to sustainable practices.

Using repurposed and sustainable materials and minimising waste, Purity flushes its coffee bags with nitrogen to maintain optimal freshness. While the brand has faced challenges in finding materials from 100% recycled products, Purity remains optimistic about the positive changes sustainability will bring to the coffee industry.

“We collect reviews from our customers who are both health and environmentally conscious, and they appreciate the effort we put in our packaging,” Brian adds.

Packaging laminates serve a fundamental purpose in safeguarding coffee from degradation and potential damage throughout the shipping process. The additional laminate acts as a barrier against external elements, preventing moisture, air, and light from compromising the quality of the coffee within.

Notably, UV protection, in particular, plays a pivotal role in preserving the freshness of the coffee. Exposure to UV light can lead to the deterioration of coffee quality, causing flavour alterations and a loss of aromatic nuances.

Custom coffee bags with packaging laminates that have UV protection contribute to the longevity of the coffee’s flavour profile. The strategic use of UV-resistant laminates ensures coffee reaches consumers in optimal condition, maintaining its distinct characteristics and enhancing the coffee experience.

Finding the right balance

While sustainable packaging is a crucial focus for environmentally conscious coffee businesses, choosing the right finish is equally critical. Matte finishes, for instance, offer UV protection and readability, while soft-touch matte finishes add a premium feel.

Alternatively, gloss packaging finishes enhance visibility and durability, making them an incredibly popular choice. A spot UV finish is environmentally friendly and applicable to compostable bags. Furthermore, it creates reflective surfaces to highlight specific design elements.

Choosing suitable packaging involves a careful balance between aesthetics and eco-conscious practices. As the industry navigates this evolving landscape, it becomes crucial for coffee roasters to select packaging options that enhance their brand’s visual representation and contribute to environmentally friendly practices.
