Modern coffee enthusiasts are spoiled for choice. Therefore, creating a memorable customer experience is paramount for coffee roasters looking to stand out in a saturated market. A large part of that stellar first impression is created when customs unbox their orders for the first time.

To achieve this, more brands are investing in innovative coffee packaging solutions that go beyond just protecting the beans. These include subscription boxes, and combining flexible coffee bags with custom boxes.

To learn more about how brands can tailor coffee packaging to create memorable experience, I spoke to Ben Charalambous and Alice Wainwright, the founders of RiSE Coffee Box in the UK.

The importance of creating a consumer experience

As the specialty coffee industry continues to grow, providing a positive customer experience is a way of standing out from competitors. Notably, exceptional customer interactions can create value and increase brand loyalty, which in turn, boosts sales.

Ben and Alice emphasise the significance of the customer experience in building trust, loyalty, and emotional connections. Their combined marketing backgrounds drive an obsession with the end-to-end customer journey. “Every single touchpoint is an opportunity to make the customer feel not only good about your brand, but fiercely loyal to your brand,” Ben explains.

At RiSE Coffee Box, the team blind tastes 25 to 30 coffees to determine which bags make it into the subscription box. Publications such as Good Housekeeping, GQ magazine, and Delicious Magazine have voted the brand’s coffee subscription box the top choice.

By conducting mystery shopping, surveys, and interviews, RiSE Coffee Box ensures continuous improvement and turns potential complaints into 5-star customer service reviews.

“As more roasters and cafes pop up, it’s harder for coffee brands to differentiate themselves,” Alice says. “One thing that you can control is how you interact with customers, whether that be in person or online. It doesn’t cost anything to be kind, compassionate, and offer exceptional service.”

How to create a memorable unboxing experience

RiSE Coffee Box recently revamped its subscription box packaging to embody the brand’s vibrant colours and compelling story. “When a customer opens the box, it feels instantly inviting with bright colours and a welcome message where we share our founder’s story,” Ben explains.

The interior of the box explains the brand’s broader mission, which is tackling child labour on coffee farms. Beyond this, a custom QR code encourages consumers to learn how RiSE is tackling this problem and giving back. “We’ve also told the story of our brand and our bigger “why” and mission on our own House Coffee packaging, so customers have something interesting and inspiring to read while their coffee brews,” Alice adds.

Customising the interior of subscription boxes can help roasters boost brand awareness uniquely, while reducing packaging design costs. For instance, customisation is a more personal design approach and allows consumers to feel more connected to a brand. Additionally, it is a highly effective way to celebrate long-term, loyal customers, while also welcoming new ones.

Each RiSE Coffee Box includes a colourful booklet that unravels the story behind the coffee, introduces the farmers, and offers brewing guides. To add an extra layer of excitement, the box includes a delightful treat from independent food and drink brands, ensuring a ‘surpRiSE’ experience reminiscent of Christmas each month.

In a conscious effort to minimise environmental impact, RiSE Coffee Box invested six months in finding a packaging supplier capable of creating home compostable packaging for their house coffee options. The result is packaging that not only aligns with their brand aesthetic but also uses plant-based materials.

This commitment to sustainability extends to their subscription boxes, which are 100% recyclable and FSC-certified. RiSE Coffee Box avoids excess packaging waste by purchasing materials based on projected orders, donating coffee waste to food banks, and giving back 1% of all coffee sales to fund education in Uganda.

Important factors to consider when creating memorable coffee packaging

Ben and Alice firmly believe their coffee packaging is an integral part of their brand story. Custom printing allows RiSE Coffee Box to bring its brand to life, contributing to high customer retention and low churn rates, with over 70% of customers staying loyal for more than 12 months.

This commitment to a unique and personalised experience underscores the impact that custom coffee packaging can have on revenue and consumer relations. In a world where coffee is more than just a beverage, RiSE Coffee Box sets a stellar example of how thoughtful packaging can elevate the customer experience, create lasting connections, and leave a positive imprint in the hearts of coffee enthusiasts.

RiSE Coffee Box takes the concept of a subscription box beyond merely delivering a product. The inclusion of a colourful booklet in each box not only educates customers about the coffee they’re enjoying but also serves as a medium for sharing the brand’s story, the farmers behind the beans, and the mission they’re championing.

Moreover, the founders recognise the importance of personalisation, even in a mass-produced world. Handwritten gift notes, a rarity in today’s age of mass printing, are offered for gifting purposes. This personalised touch enhances the overall customer experience, making RiSE Coffee Box stand out in a sea of standardised offerings.
