Recent statistics show that the global coffee market is projected to reach a whopping $110.7 billion in 2028. With competition increasing, specialty coffee brands are always looking for new ways to engage and retain customers.

More brands are combining flexible coffee bags with custom printed coffee boxes to create a superior customer experience. Notably, exceptional customer interactions can create value and increase brand loyalty, which in turn, boosts sales.

Coffee boxes offer not only additional protection for the beans but also additional space for customisation, branding, and product information. Beyond this, coffee that is delivered in a custom-printed box is often perceived as a more luxurious product – which can help justify a higher price point.

To learn why more brands are combining coffee boxes and flexible coffee packaging, I spoke to several specialty coffee businesses that have decided to do so.

Why invest in coffee boxes?

Custom printed coffee boxes are an effective and authentic way to showcase your brand in an eye-catching and consistently engaging manner. They’re also an easy way to increase brand awareness and customer engagement. For instance, custom coffee boxes provide a unique way for customers to identify a brand at a glance.

In addition to including the brand’s logo and branding, coffee boxes can be tailored to the individual customer’s preferences and needs. This kind of personalisation not only makes the customer feel special but also encourages them to engage with the brand. For example, they may post images of the product on social media channels or leave a review on the website.

Another benefit to coffee boxes is that they offer additional production protection. When combined with flexible coffee bags, boxes are highly effective at protecting the beans from damage during transport and delivery. Custom coffee boxes also provide more space for branding and product information than traditional packaging.

Additional information may include the story behind the brand, coffee origins, and even brewing instructions. Information such as this can help educate customers about the product while doubling as a powerful marketing tool.

Last, custom coffee boxes can be designed to present the product in a more luxurious and high-end way. Brands will choose high quality packaging materials, such as kraft paper with an embossed design, or one that features hot foil stamping. This can help to make the product stand out on store shelves and increase its perceived value, which can lead to a boost in sales.

“Every single touchpoint is an opportunity to make the customer feel not only good about your brand, but fiercely loyal to your brand,” explains Ben Charalambous, the co-founder of RiSE Coffee Box in the UK.

Why combine coffee bags and custom boxes?

As coffee boxes can be personalised for a specific range of coffee, holiday, or season, combining them with flexible pouches makes a highly sought after product. Curated product offerings can entice customers and differentiate a brand from its competitors.

Research shows consumers aged between 18 and 24 have more financial freedom, with 46% more likely to buy a limited edition item. Notably, 45% of consumers aged between 35 and 39 years say they have already purchased a “limited” item. Among younger consumers, and perhaps more loyal patrons, limited edition products are often considered more enticing.

A final consideration for combining coffee bags and boxes is the cost factor. Investing in renewable packaging materials, such as corrugated kraft paper boxes, may be more affordable depending on the supplier. By providing a product that is different from marketplace competitors, coffee businesses can increase brand identification, buyer loyalty, and repeat purchases.

A fine example is Kolo Coffee in Ukraine. The brand is owned by Vladyslav Demonenko, the World Vice Champion in Coffee in Good Spirits 2022. Kolo combines its stand up coffee bags with a crisp white box. Each box features the brand’s name in bold blank ink and a coffee card slot.

Beyond this, Kolo’s coffee boxes are secured with a bright orange nylon band with a cord lock: a symbol of how coffee helps connect people, regardless of age, circumstance, or race. “This visual is all about us, how we see, feel, and taste coffee,” Vladyslav explains. “Our brand is about three key aspects: innovation, simplicity, and community, and our packaging showcases that perfectly.”

What to consider before making the investment

Before adding custom coffee boxes to your packaging, there are a few things to consider. For instance, the costs of design and manufacture are important factors, as custom boxes can often be costly to design and manufacture. Therefore, it’s important to consider the costs involved and ensure they align with the budget and goals of your business.

Additionally, it’s important to consider the cost-to-benefit ratio and how custom coffee boxes can best be used to increase sales and brand awareness. One of the most important considerations is packaging materials, adhesives, and how the box will be customised. It is essential that you choose materials that not only align with the brand’s visual identity but are also eco-friendly and sustainable.

That also applies to any inks and adhesives used to customise the box after its assembly. Inks and labels can prevent your packaging from being sustainable. Ink needs to bond with the packaging’s surface to resist abrasion, water, and heat throughout its lifecycle. It can be difficult to remove, making recycling challenging if the inks contain harmful materials or have a non-renewable petroleum base. Labels can also keep your packaging from being sustainable if non-renewable adhesives are used to attach the label to the packaging’s surface.
