From greased leather sacks to bags treated with beeswax, coffee packaging has come a long way. These days, both businesses and consumers expect coffee packaging to do more than just preserve flavour; it needs to be convenient, visually appealing, and sustainable.

Beyond having such features, flat bottom coffee bags are becoming a favourite for many roasters because of their versatility and rapidly evolving design options. Market researchers predict this packaging category will rise to $2.3 billion within a decade, up from its current $1.5 billion value.

Just like most packaging options, these bags also carry unique challenges. After using them for years. Nazri Hassan, founder of C&P Coffee Company, shares his thoughts about their popularity, benefits, potential drawbacks, and so much more.

The never-ending popularity of flat bottom coffee bags

C&P Coffee is more than just a coffee shop; it is also a dedicated coffee roaster and wholesaler. Founder Nazri ensures that the brand not only sources the finest coffee beans but also uses packaging that meets the highest standards.

β€œThe journey has been incredibly rewarding and full of learning experiences,” Nazri admits. C&P Coffee Company has a lot to offer, and Nazri adds that the brand has a variety of packaging options to cater to different needs, including flat bottom coffee bags.

Flat bottom bags are often used to contain products such as pet food, nutritional supplements, detergents, or cosmetics. Broadly speaking, it’s a practical solution that is often favoured by both consumers and businesses. Modern-day consumers shopping for food, for instance, want convenient, aesthetically pleasing, sustainable coffee bags they can open with ease and count on to keep their coffee fresh for longer.

In meeting this need, businesses go a step further to look for a cost-effective packaging solution that not only stands out on crowded shelves but is also convenient to store and transport. Many specialty coffee roasters have settled on flat bottom coffee bags in their search for an answer to this challenge.

It’s a path Nazri is familiar with. β€œOne of our mainstays is the flat bottom coffee bag,” he says. The US is estimated to hold a major portion of the North American flat bottom bags market – a trend driven by consumers who prefer sustainable and convenient packaging. It appears that things are no different in Malaysia.

β€œThis type of packaging has become very popular among customers here,” Nazri says, adding that it plays a significant role in how products are presented at C&P Coffee Company. On reflection, he attributes the popularity of these bags to a number of things, beginning with shelf life. β€œThey provide excellent stability on shelves, which is important for both retailers and customers,” he says.

In addition to that, Nazri says the structure of flat bottom coffee bags allows for better protection of the coffee, helping to maintain freshness and flavour for longer periods. Last, he praises their practicality.

β€œThe flat bottom also makes the bags easier to store and stack, which is a practical benefit for both sellers and consumers.”

Characteristics of flat bottom coffee bags

Essentially, flat bottom packaging has a wide, rectangular base. Spacious front and back panels converge at the top, secured by a closure mechanism such as a tear notch, zipper, or spout. On the left and right sides, you have gussets. which not only strengthens it but also creates enough space for a product of your choice.

In the past, all these five panels would be put together manually using glue. Seeing that this was unreasonable, in 1868, Margaret Knight invented a machine to automate the process. It would cut, fold, and glue the paper to create these bags.

Fast-forward to today, and automation has gotten much better, with machines that can prepare the material, form it into shapes, and seal the panels both vertically and horizontally using heat and other methods. From here, other processes, such as printing, lamination, or incorporation of additional features like degassing valves, take place.

Kraft paper is a popular choice for creating the outer layer of flat bottom coffee bags. That said, some options also use composite materials and plastics, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Some bags may feature two or multiple layers of materials, either for added protection or aesthetic purposes.

An aluminium layer, for instance, is highly effective at keeping light, oxygen, and moisture out, while metalised films can create a shiny reflective surface that evokes a luxurious feeling.

Flat bottom coffee bags made from sustainable materials have become a game-changer for countless coffee businesses, including C&P Coffee. β€œThese bags are highly appreciated by our customers, which has led to positive feedback and repeat purchases,” Nazri reveals.

β€œThe use of flat-bottom bags has positively impacted our business in several ways,” he confesses. Other rising coffee brands, including Win Win Coffee, Allpress Espresso, Maiden Coffee Roasters, and Lucid Coffee Roasters, have successfully leveraged eco-friendly bags to grow their business.

Flat bottom coffee bags: A staple in coffee packaging

Coffee packaging has evolved significantly since its early days of greased leather sacks and beeswax-coated bags in the 1700s. The 1800s ushered in options such as tins, cans, and paper bags, with the latter gaining popularity for its hygienic appeal.

The post-1960s focused on refining packaging for better preservation, leading to innovations like ready-to-drink (RTD) coffee cans, pods, and capsules. Today, sustainability and customisation take center stage in coffee packaging. While the traditional look of flat bottom coffee bags might seem like a challenge in a design-focused market, most specialty coffee businesses like C&P Coffee have found a way around this.

β€œMany customers appreciate the classic and straightforward design, which conveys a sense of reliability and quality,” Nazri explains, adding they went the extra mile to enhance the visuals. β€œWe’ve also made sure to incorporate modern elements into our packaging design, such as vibrant colours and clear labelling, to keep it visually appealing and relevant.”

The feedback from customers has been overwhelmingly positive. β€œThe traditional yet sleek design has been praised for its aesthetic appeal and functionality,” Nazri reveals. β€œMany customers have commented on how easy it is to store and handle these bags, and they love the fact that the coffee remains fresh for longer.”

These positives extend to the business as well. To begin with, Nazri says that these sustainable coffee bags β€œprovide excellent stability on shelves, which is important for both retailers and customers.” He adds that their structure allows for better protection of the coffee, maintaining freshness and flavour for longer periods.
